A quick trip to the Criterion site today resulted, not surprisingly, in me looking at some very pretty dvd covers for a bit. Here are some highlights.

Stagecoach - I love pretty much everything about this cover. The colours are perfect. It's playful but not too playful, and the Criterion logo looks deliberately slightly offset to connote an older, imperfect printing style, which is a nice touch. Even though I've never seen this movie, I would put a poster version of this (sans the Criterion bar on the left) up on my walls for sure. It also makes me want to see the movie.

Make Way For Tomorrow - A Criterion cover by Seth? Awesome. If you have Seth create your book or dvd cover, I will want to consume the material inside. That's a sad but true fact. I take it as his personal endorsement. Should I?

Night Train to Munich - Like a vintage travel poster, but with terrifying action, and a subtle swastika. I wonder if this was created just for this cover, or was an original poster? Either way, I am impressed.

Two-Lane Blacktop - I know nothing about this film, but this cover, and the fact that it's a part of the collection, makes me want to see it. There's a whole lot of bad-ass going on on there. Okay, I just read the description, and now I definitely want to see it... Wow, Richard Linklater's Ten Reasons I Love Two-Lane Blacktop makes me want to even more!!

La Strada - BIG fan of this cover. Nicely done, great colours. Love the b&w with the red dot on the bottom image. It also helps that I think that Giulietta Masina is absolutely adorable in this film. This cover is a great reminder of that.

This site visit also reminded me that I need to buy the Criterion Bottle Rocket. Gotta round out the Criterion Wes Anderson collection.

What a weekend. I got a new phone, and the flu. I've been bed/couch-ridden since Sunday afternoon. Not so pleasant.

I'm loving this moon globe. The owners run a vintage shop on Etsy where they sell a lot of things that are pretty up my alley. Definitely worth taking a browse through.

I need to carve out more time to design stuff just to design stuff for my own fun and enjoyment. That's what things like this always make me think of...

Wes Anderson's Spiderman. Josh Chong shared this on Google reader. I have to admit, I thought it was going to be crap. I was pleasantly surprised!

Exit Through the Gift Shop. Bansky makes a movie? I may have to put this on the 'must see' list. It's definitely on the radar, and I need to find out more about it.

I love this postcard for the fact that it would have been sent out blank, in order for the sellers to add their own place name to the card. A ridiculous idea, but efficient, and one of those older practices that I have a real spot in my heart for.

The Pelican Collection. Tonnes of materials, real nice to see. Makes me wonder if there's something similar for Penguin paperbacks. Gotta love 'em. (via Draplin)

If I was going to buy another laptop anytime soon, and for some reason it wasn't going to be a Mac, it'd be this one right here. It's a thing of beauty for sure, and trying to make the world better at the same time.

Pretty much every year at Christmas I make a joke about buying someone inappropriate a flask. This is really because I have always wanted a flask. I am pretty sure that I would rarely, if ever, use one, which is why I never buy myself one, but the comment is always rooted in the fact that if someone ever bought me one for Christmas, that would be pretty great. This one here is pretty ideal. Not the traditional flask shape I love, but at the same time, I love this one for it's shape, you know (and finish, of course).

This may be my longest awaited Criterion Collection dvd. I remember renting this as a new release when I was hunting through the Rogers video store near my house, and saw only one copy of it on the shelf. Pretty standard practice for me at the time. Renting all of my movies at a big movie store, I always looked for things they only bought one copy of, always more up my alley than the big blockbusters. Not that I haven't watched it again since then, but I've never bought it because I knew they eventually had to put this one out, so that at least the first 4 Anderson movies could be a matched set, even if his current contract means following ones won't be (from what I hear at least...

Recently, Meet Your Printmaker featured a local artist, which was quite surprising! Seems like a real nice guy, who, thankfully, seems to do real nice work. Looking forward to maybe seeing him at the zine fair.
