Last week my (proper) use of the term bindle was questioned which got me off on about an hour long search of Hobo related things on the internet (we may or may not have been watching The Littlest Hobo at the time), and I came across this picture on wikipedia. I've really been loving it since, so I thought I'd share it with you.

Look, it's an interview with my friend Ben Ong, about his band Bocce! Two great things in this world.
------
This here giraffe on the Guelph Graffiti blog sure is cute!
------
I have found my new choice of vehicle for use in the Zombie-pocalypse: the Armour Horse Vault XXL. Protection AND luxury.

Worst collab. ever? I guess the end result isn't as bad as it could be, but still, when I saw that these two highly overrated brands (I guess Tommy Hilfiger seems pretty down these days, but Haring seems to be a totally undeserved and annoying upswing) were working together, I immediately wanted to puke. Why do people like either of these brands? (I say brand as, even though Keith Haring was a person, his legacy does live on in the brand associated with his name.)

Edie Harper, Charley Harper's wife, and a respected artist in her own right, passed away last week. Read a bit about her on Grain Edit. Talented couple for sure.

Today's the big day. Well, tomorrow's the big day, since I haven't gone to sleep yet. Can't wait to get the keys and get in there. Lots of things to do. Paint colours to choose. Appliances large and small to buy. Things to learn. Can't wait.

Pictures to come for sure. Stressed out times to come for sure too...

On to other things for now though...

Loving this skateboard. Habitat's always done nice stuff, but putting Charley Harper on a deck? nice work. There's other ones too, check 'em out here.

Recently I noticed that the building that housed Byma's Tire & Auto in the Bridgeport plaza was being torn down. This got me really worried about the beautiful large Firestone sign that has sat on the outskirts of the parking lot on Bridgeport for as long as I can remember.

Turns out my worries were warranted. Before I even got out to take some photographs to document its existence, the sign has been removed. What a shame. I just looked up Byma's online and it turns out they have simply moved, not folded, so now my only hope is that the sign is moving with them to their new home. I've emailed them to find out if that is the case. Failing that, maybe they can tell me where it has gone so I can go take pictures of it.

This is just one of those things that makes me sad. It's just a damn shame to see the nice things go, while crap keeps going up. Draplin sums this kind of thing all up very nicely here.

Here's some real gorgeous business cards. Not surpisingly made by Studio on Fire, and not surprising made for Space 150.

Amazingly, Space 150 completely redesigns their design identity every 150 days. Completely. Like, letterheads, everything. Every 150 days. That's huge. Major commitment there. Just imagine the expenditure even...

Check out more of the stuff Studio on Fire has done for them here.

In movie watching news. DO NOT watch S. Darko. Terrible.

I feel like I had more to say, but I guess not. Too many other things to think about I think.

Unconditionally Guaranteed

That little feller above is either now, or will soon be, in the post, on it's way to join my merry little collection. I can't wait! New! In package! Unfortunately, I had to pay a little more than I normally would for a cub, and substantially more than the $1.49 on the package. Definitely worth it just for that "unconditionally guaranteed" line on label. So bold and confident. Strong. Like a good stapler should be.

(I should mention that Jenna found this. 'Cause she's awesome, and she did.)

More bread! Those labels are pretty amazingly Charley Harper-esque if you ask me. Once again, I'd totally pick that shit up based on packaging alone.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you may be able to guess, I do love me some vintage light fixtures, and this company appears to make some beautiful reproductions. Not that I can imagine having the money to throw around on them, but it's nice to know they're out there. Some of their coloured shades are pretty damn nice.

While at least one person I know has been geeking out over the Star Wars lego sets that are going around, there's a new development afoot that I think I can get behind: Lego Architecture. Starting with some Frank Lloyd Wright. Awesome. Can't wait to see what else comes out of that.

Riding the rails. Killer logo. Nicely composed shot. One of the rare times when "buy framed image" is a link I might possibly consider... (via Draplin)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Badass new Timber shirt. Will be putting my order in for that one soon. Mos. def.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, the best news for last: Chili's opens in Ontario. Hell yes. May have to hit that up this weekend... More locations to open by 2014 (which is a lot closer than it sounds like it should be, if you know what I mean...)

Charley Harper at Old Navy? A shopping trip this weekend yielded that surprise. You can bet I was excited to see him out in public more, even if it is at Old Navy. The printing on the t-shirts isn't very good, and all of the books and whatnot are cheaper on Amazon (what isn't?), but you have to assume that a lot more kids could end up learning their abc's from Charley's beautiful art now. We actually didn't buy any of it, due to the aforementioned better prices on Amazon, but still... What I did buy was this pretty great pair of pj pants.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Google is hosting the Life magazine photo archives, which is a pretty crazily large collection of some amazing photography (article about it). I haven't gotten a chance to look too much into it, but photos keep showing up in other places, like this great picture of the first enclosed shopping mall on Shorpy.

Did you know that the distinctive Coke bottle shape was designed by a Canadian? Neither did I. Okay, so technically he was an American living in Toronto, but you know, close. Anyway, box vox posted the original patent application for the bottle shape, which is kind of neat to see.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some movies I'm looking forward to/hoping to get to see at some point:
The Brothers Bloom (Brick director Rian Johnson's new one)
Dear Zachary (I feel like I would likely cry through a good chunk of)
Beautiful Losers (I've mentioned this before, but I really want to see it!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've got more stuff sitting in tabs I've been meaning to mention, but it's time for work!

13.8.08

So lately I've gotten into This American Life (late, I know). The weird thing is that I actually got into it through the tv show (well, not so weird considering how much I love tv). Not that I hadn't heard of the radio show before, in fact, I'd been meaning to listen to it forever. But then one day Jenna downloaded one episode of the tv show, and I was like "oh yeah!" And then a little while later I started downloading some more, and then we were hooked. The bad part about it is, there's only so many episodes of the tv show (12, actually). But the good part is, there's about a million episodes of the radio show to listen to.

This came in handy the last two days at work. The boss is at his cottage, and I was all pumped to listen to music while working yesterday. I remembered my ipod, but forgot the cord, and just as I was cursing myself, I remembered that you can stream T.A.L. on their website. And so work has been good this week, if a little stressful for other reasons.

I have listened to and recommend:
Notes on Camp - I love stories about camp. I always wish I had gone, but I totally would have hated it if I had.
Prom - Gee, is it obvious that I love portrayals of the experiences of youth?
Superpowers - Chris Ware talks about his own superhero obsession in this one!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jenna found the website of the designer behind our favourite Keds shoes: Eleanor Grosch. At times she seems pretty obviously inspired by Charley Harper, and there ain't nothin' wrong with that. She also designed a raccoon pillow that I've thought about buying before at Urban Outfitters without knowing it was hers. I can't remember why I never did buy it. She also has some pretty great stuff available here.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And, while I'm to things to decorate your home with, and even though I'm often not the biggest fan of wall stickers, there's something about this set that I quite like.
Of course there's all kinds of things from veer that I quite like, but I'll probably never own any of it. Especially since, as much as I love that mug, it's $18!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And finally: this one's for the Qatalyst folks, if they take my invitation and stop by.
